New Homeowners Guide to Roof Gutter Installation
For every homeowner, rain gutters are essential especially in protecting the home from damages caused by rainwater. It is important to consider installation of both gutters and downspouts as they work well in collecting and carrying the rainwater away from the house which helps avoid any leaks and splashing. Actually, these two helps in preventing soil erosion around the home and also in splashing of dirt on the siding. Rainwater that falls too close to the home is also likely to cause dampness both on the floor and the walls which in return could easily cause the paint to peel.
It is important for the homeowners to seek for the help in installation, repair or replacement of these two important features on their roofs. In fact, it is not advisable to consider DIY especially if you are not qualified in such projects. Instead, you should consider hiring a roofing contractor who is highly qualified and experienced for such kind of jobs. However, if you intend to do the installation on your own, this article will help you with a step-by-step guide on how you can do it.
How to install roof gutters in your home
The first thing to consider if you are not planning to hire a professional roof contractor is to have all the necessary materials and equipments. These can be purchased from your local roofing supply dealer and lumberyard. It is also important to note that roof gutters come in different styles, sizes and materials and you should therefore choose one that best which suits your preference while offering maximum benefits. You can either choose modern square gutters or go for the traditional quad ones but always consider the color of your roof and fascia and ensure that they are matching properly. This is good for aesthetic appeal of your home.
At the same time, it is important to check whether your local council allows for DIY gutter installation since different local councils do not permit this. If it is permitted, then you can go ahead and do the work. However, you will need the following materials and equipments:
- Gutters, downpipes, tape measure, elbows, sealant, hacksaw or metal snips, splash block and wall brackets.
- Ladder, string line, chalk line, level, hammer, brackets, screws, nails or masonry fasteners.
Actual gutter and downpipe installation process:
First step: Take the measurement and mark the section where you need to attach the brackets using a strong-line. For the downpipes, there should be a slope from the top section to the downpipe with an allowance of approximately 20mm for every 10 meters. Fasten the brackets using the screws or nails every 700-750mm of the fascia.
Second step: Using your sealant, connect the gutters together according to the required length and then use gutter fastener on the outer part and your sealant inside. This will help in linking two gutters together strongly while at the same time preventing leaks.
Third step: Mount the gutters on the brackets you have already attached on the fascia before snapping the clips in the top of your brackets. This will help them to hold strongly making it hard for them to fall or be blown away by the wind.
Forth step: Connect the downpipe and downpipe outlet by attaching the elbow. Take the measurement between 2 elbows and then cut the pipe. Slide the pipe over the gutter elbow and inside the downpipe elbow. Once this is done, set the gutter on the brackets and seal. Finish by attaching the downpipe on the wall using brackets or straps with a space of 2m apart. Direct the downpipe to a drain allowing the water to flow away from the house.
This is a long and tedious task and as you can see it would be better to involve a professional to do it for you. It might cost you a few dollars but it is really worth having them.
