Drug Addiction- A Serious Problem in Society
In recent times, in India or should i say all across the world, drug-addiction is assumed as a menace and this evil is increasing by leaps and bounds. It is widely spreading mostly in hostels and campuses of universities as well as in professional institutions in the country. Charas, Ganja, Heroin, smack or brown sugar ‘bhanga‘ and even ‘LSD‘ are in great demand nowadays and are purchased at exorbitant prices.
Drug addiction is really an evil for people of all ages. Lots of cases are associated due to the intake of drugs. In many houses it happens that teenagers or young ones do not get the love, care and attention which they should get at their age. In most of the houses, these days, it happens that their parents have jobs and consequently they don’t get much time to look after their children. On the other hand, it also happens sometimes that their parents are not in good terms with each other. They often quarrel and sometimes the quarreling among them increases in such a way that it even concludes to violence, and life inside the house becomes unhappy and unpleasant. Sometimes such quarrels even lead to divorce concluding to the breakup in the family. In some cases, it also could be seen that husband/father remains busy all the time in his own social life and they used to look after the children. The ultimate result for all these cases are that the children or young ones feel lonely and neglected in their own home. Most of the times, they really feel frustrated after seeing the lack of love and affection among their parents as well as in their houses. In these cases, it generally happens that teenagers tends to move towards drug addiction due to their so called friends or anyone else who try to show little bit of care to them, who themselves are drug-addicts. Generally in the beginning, drugs are provided to them in quite a cheap rate but the price increases when they are found to get addicted to it because without them they can’t do anything or even they feel like dying without it.
Drug-addiction is becoming an acute problem in our society which has even defied all efforts in controlling it so far. The drug-addicts can’t do anything even for a short while without the intake of drugs, and this habit goes on increasing day by day until & unless the person find himself as a helpless creature in the society and as a puppet of drugs. It’s also true that he got to get his dose of it at a fixed time and if he does not get it, he often cries for that as well as even become incapable to move. At the end, he has got no chance but to borrow money from someone or even to steal it from his own home or from any other places which is within his reach. He or she totally gets exploited in various ways by their so called friends or the sellers of these vicious drugs. Often these evil drugs results into suicide concluding to ruin the whole family. The only beneficiaries are the vendors of these drugs. They thrive while their victims perish.
Total eradication of this evil is the urgent need of the hour, and fight against it should and must be undertaken like warfare. Public opinion should be raised against it and the different media like the press, the radio, the television, the cinemas, the public platform or even the class room must come together into service to combat this evil. In this way the people more particularly the youth could be made aware of these evil consequences. They must be made to realize that whoever initiates them into this evil practice are not their friends but their enemies.
Secondly, those who are into the smuggling of these drugs and making huge profits by selling it to their helpless victims shouldn’t be allowed to do. Thirdly, de-addiction centers must be established, at least in all major cities or wherever the victims of this vicious practice are more so that they might be treated soon and gradually could be weaned from it. The drug-addicts need sympathy as well as understanding of their problems. They should be treated in such a way so that they could overcome from this evil and lead a happy and successful life.
We are glad to see that the government is fully alive to remove this problem from its root. Media has already begun to remove this problem. Programs or advertisement should be shown in the television aimed to eradicate this evil soon. The fight against this social evil has begun and its eradication is just a matter of time only.
