Krishna Janmaashtami also known with the name “Krishnaashtami” celebrated on the eighth day of the dark half or Krishna Paksha of the month of Shravana in the Hindu Calendar. The festival is celebrated as a birth of God Krishna, who is considered as an avatar of the God Vishnu. Mathura (in Uttar Pradesh) is the birth place of God Krishna and he is the eighth son born to Vasudeva and their wife Devaki. Following the birth and to save the life of child Krishna, his father take him to Gokul to Nanda & Yashoda, where they can live their remaining life safely.
Krishna Janmashtami 2017 Date – 14 August, 2017 (Monday)
Janmashtami is celebrated by Hindus, where they keep fasting until midnight when Krishna is believed to have been born. The day is spent by singing & reading holy songs and prayers of Lord Krishna. At midnight the fast is get closed by midnight Aarti. During the festivals all temples are beautifully decorated with flowers & divine Leela is performed depicting scenes from Krishna’s life, especially of their childhood.
The traditional Prashad of “Panchajiri” and “Makhan” being distributed among devotees. The most popular ceremony on the second day includes “Dahi-Handi”, which includes breaking a pot full of milk and its derivatives this ceremony replicates Krishna love for milk & butter. The winning team gets rewarded by prize money which will further get distributed among participants.
As Krishna was born in Mathura and spent his childhood and teenage years there. So festival is celebrated with Great Spirit and with unmatched zeal and grandeur, especially at Mathura. The town situated on the banks of river Yamuna. Holy town Vrindavan is also famous for Rasleela & childhood memories of Krishna. During the Krishna Janmashtami Celebration, Both the towns are well-decorated 10 days back & most devotees spend the day witnessing the events & celebration. The celebration continues till midnight and people flock for their ceremonies & ritualistic events that take place throughout the day.
